Dr. Gaurav Sharma aspires to be a transformative physician-leader who utilizes his education, training and experience to bring about Lean and ISO inspired change in anatomical and clinical pathology laboratories. As a medical student and intern, he completed formal auditor training in ISO 9001, ISO 17025 and ISO 15189 and led the accreditation of India’s first ISO 9001 compliant voluntary external proficiency program (VILAC). As a chief resident at Henry Ford Hospital, he contributed to the development and implementation of numerous process improvements aimed at patient safety. The emerging methodology of next-generation sequencing (NGS) and its applicability to oncology, microbiology and constitutional testing is of great interest to him as it combines his training background in anatomical, clinical and molecular testing with informatics.

In his present position, Dr. Sharma provides active medical leadership to the health system’s regional laboratory network, core/stat laboratory, outreach laboratory and laboratory formulary and is consulted on ISO 15189 accreditation. He has championed the implementation of value stream mapping (VSM) and daily metric monitoring in these laboratories and demonstrated substantial reduction in waste that has translated into savings in technical labor and time while boosting employee participation in daily problem solving. He is the director of the Reference and Esoteric Testing rotation for pathology residents in which they are trained on principles of appropriate laboratory test utilization, send-out testing issues and laboratory operations in the in-house, ambulatory and outreach settings. Recently, he has been recognized by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) as being amongst the 40 ASCP Members under the age of 40 that represent the achievements and qualities important to the pathology and laboratory sciences fields.
